Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Bend, Oregon

Board members of the Bend Area Habitat for Humanity hired Stemach Design & Architecture to master plan and design a renovation of the old Backstrom’s Builders Center into their new ReStore non-profit home improvement store. The existing Backstroms building was stripped and gutted with a sizable portion of the materials being reused and re-purposed in the new renovation, including the former metal roofing reused as siding.

Donated materials such as the metal roofing and cedar make up a substantial savings to the project. A portion of the existing structures were removed and rebuilt using energy efficient staggered stud construction and site built windows using donated copper and insulated glass units.

The exterior cedar siding is made entirely of reclaimed cedar donated to the organization and installed using volunteers based on a mock up design and process developed by Stemach Design & Architecture. The cedar is intended to age naturally and turn silver over time. A custom designed light fixture (“Given”) was designed and built by Stemach Design & Architecture for the entry vestibule.
