A 100-year-old former box and crate factory for the Brooks Scanlon Lumber company is experiencing new growth and uses as new tenants move in. Stemach Design + Architecture has led the design and building code compliance effort of the revitalization work for the property, including a full repair and upgrade of the existing fire sprinkler systems, seismic structural upgrades, and fire code compartmentalization, which are enabling the new uses to safely occupy this historic structure.

Designed as a new growler-fill station for Atlas Cider Co., this new space provides a bar and seating area for patrons, as well as a lounge filled with arcade games. As part of the design, a new concrete patio was built to provide additional outdoor seating and room for events. New structural improvements allowed the Design Team to open large portions of the existing walls, creating an more open floor plan and connected spaces. Interior decorating was performed by the tenant.

This renovation of an existing suite transforms the space from dark and crowded to bright, naturally lit and voluminous. Removal of existing mezzanines above allow for direct solar access to the existing building’s clerestory windows. The new space will act as a staging area for guided tours around town. A new aluminum storefront entry door and glazed overhead garage door provide additional light to the space and update the building’s facade. A new timber-framed sign structure will replicate the existing building’s design standard and provide high visibility from Industrial Way for the tenant.
